EV charging points to be mandatory for new homes
Electric vehicle charging points will be required by law in new-build homes from 2022, as part of new legislation announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson earlier this week.
Speaking at the Confederation of British Industry conference on Monday 22nd November, the PM announced a host of changes in respect to EV charging, with new-build workplaces, supermarkets and buildings undergoing major renovation requiring EV installation.
This will make England the first country to require EV chargers in new homes, and comes as part of the government’s strategy to reduce emissions and act as a world leader on environmental issues. These changes contribute to the overall aim to ban the sale of petrol and diesel cars by 2030.
The announced plans will lead to the installation of 145,000 additional charge points across England every year, with the hopes that the new laws surrounding homes and frequently visited places will make it as easy as refuelling a petrol or diesel car today.
