The end of halogen lightbulbs

Nov 10, 2021 | Industry Knowledge

The Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Energy has announced that the sale of halogen light bulbs will be banned from September 2021, with fluorescent light bulbs to follow in September 2023, which comes as part of a nationwide effort to tackle climate change.

Currently, LED light bulbs account for two-thirds of light bulbs sold in Britain, which has massively improved the efficiency of Britain’s buildings. LED is 90% more efficient and lasts 10 times longer than their halogen counterparts, yet requires 80% less power.

Despite this impressive statistic, halogen light bulbs are still in use. This crackdown will reduce their use by stopping the sale of the majority of halogen light bulbs to general households, which came into effect from the 1st of September 2021.

To help make this change, ministers are proposing a new energy scale for light bulbs. This will see the confusing A+, A++, and A+++ removed, and the grading system scaled back to a simplified A-G ranking. This change will also see the rating boundaries increase, meaning the standard is rising and the ability to choose the most environmentally friendly light bulbs is becoming simpler.
