Training the next generation of apprentices

Aug 10, 2020 | Interviews, Our Team

Training young people to be electricians has been at the heart of West & West since its inception in 2010.  Over the years, our family has trained in excess of 30 apprentices.  Some of those former apprentices are now senior members of the West & West team and one is now our semi-retired contracts manager. We encourage our graded electricians to be generous with their knowledge and expertise and to nurture our apprentices, showing them best practice.

What our Apprentices Say

Bradley is one of our latest apprentices to complete his training. After struggling in his first year at another construction firm, he moved his apprenticeship to West & West. “I’m really happy with how my apprenticeship went and that’s all down to West & West,” he says. “In my first year I struggled as I didn’t have enough information to learn about being an electrician and that put me behind in my college and practical work.  I knew I had to make a change, so I moved to West & West and I’ve not looked back.” He continues: “I was made very welcome and everyone has been helpful to me, giving me confidence to become a better person and a better electrician. I’m very grateful for what the company has done for me and look forward to working for them for many years to come. Every day is a new challenge and that’s why I enjoy my job so much.”

Mubeen completed his training with us this year and is another success story.

“I started my apprenticeship in August 2016 and enjoyed every moment,” he says. “It went very smoothly and the whole team is filled with supportive people. The standard of training is very high and West & West is very dedicated to their apprentices, so I’m really grateful to have got an apprenticeship with the company.”

It’s heart-warming to see 16-year olds develop into confident, knowledgeable young people and they are a credit to themselves as well as our company.

Training Partnerships

We are focused on building long-lasting relationships with our staff and are committed to providing them with the highest quality training.  We have forged a strong training partnership with JTL with all our electrical apprentices trained by the company.

During 2020 we have taken on three new electrical apprentices. Encouraged by our commitment, Ian Stoneham, JTL’s Assistant Manager comments:

“The fact that you are still in a position to have recruited three apprentices this year is very encouraging in view of the current Covid crisis. It’s been a very challenging time for us all but there appears to be some light at the end of the tunnel.”

Why is it so important for us to train apprentices?

Unfortunately, there are many sub-standard so-called electricians still operating in our industry. Not only is this damaging the reputation of the sector, but risking the safety of the public.

Apprentices are vital in tackling this issue and raising standards across the electrical contracting industry. That’s why we are passionate about training our own electricians to the highest standard possible as reflected in our motto:

“Passion for Performance Beyond Expectation”

And it doesn’t stop there.  We actively encourage our employees to go further with their own personal development, to fulfil their potential and achieve their career goals. This has seen some move to pastures new and we’re encouraged by that. One is at the top of his profession as a contracts manager and another has started his own successful business.  We stay in touch and have good relationships with them.

We know that our investment in these people has enabled them to move on but would never see that as a negative. We are proud to have trained them to be the best they can be – highly skilled people who will make a difference to our industry.

This year, we have invested in training a Finance and Business Apprentice for the first time.  What a joy that is too.  We love to share the knowledge we have gained over the many years of working in the electrical contracting industry.  There is so much to learn and we believe that we can make a difference to the construction industry by providing the highest standards of training and instilling confidence in the next generation of electrical engineers.

Looking Ahead

As the construction industry continues to evolve, the role of the electrical contractor will only become more critical in achieving net zero goals.

We are committed to staying at the forefront of that change, combining technical expertise with practical delivery to create buildings that perform better, for longer.
