Workplace Electric Vehicle Charging: Your Questions Answered

May 11, 2021 | Industry Knowledge

The Government’s commitment to phasing out polluting cars and vans by 2030 is boosting demand for electric vehicles. The UK already has more rapid charging points per 100 miles than any other EU country and there are plans to expand the network further, as well as invest in more electric vehicle (EV) technology.

For many businesses, this mean that providing EV charging at the workplace is moving higher up the agenda. Inevitably, this is also leading to questions about the process and how feasible it is for individual companies. So, if you’re thinking about installing EV chargers at your premises and are unsure about where to start or how it works, here are the answers to some of the most common queries.

Can EV chargers be installed at any workplace?

The short answer is yes, and the process is usually much easier than you think.  However, there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution for EV charging, so it is important to commission a site survey. This will help to establish any potential constraints and ensure the charging units are tailored to your company’s requirements. The installation and EV chargers will depend on several factors, including the location of your property, access, number of staff and the current power supply and usage.

What is the best type of charger to use at a workplace?

There is a wide range of different charging units available for business use and supplied by a variety of manufacturers. Ultimately, the type of unit you select will depend on the speed at which you want the vehicles to be charged – and the results of a site survey. A quicker charge requires more power and that means a more expensive unit.

An 11kw, 3 phase charger is currently one of the most popular for businesses. This can charge a vehicle in around 2 – 8 hours depending on the model and can trickle charge while employees are working.

Another consideration is the potential installation cost. A wall mounted unit will be cheaper to install than a charging post, which will require electrical services to be installed underground.

What financial support is a business entitled to?

Businesses can take advantage of the Government’s Workplace Charging Scheme. This is a grant that can reduce the up-front purchasing and installation costs of EV charging points by 75 per cent. The grant is capped at £350 per socket and a single company can claim up to 40 sockets.

There are some conditions, including that the charge points must be fitted by an approved OLEV installer and the business must have dedicated off-street parking for staff, visitors or fleet use.

Companies wishing to use the grant should apply online and if successful, will be issued with a voucher code. Your OLEV approved installer will use this to claim the grant after the installation has been completed.

Will I be able to monitor how much energy is being used?

EV chargers use smart technology, which enables a business owner to remotely monitor, manage and restrict the use of the units to help optimise energy consumption. This is done via a cloud-based platform which is connected to each charging point.

How long does it take to install EV charging units?

Depending on the number of charging units and where they will be located on site, they can be installed in less than a day.

How do I find an approved installer of EV charging points?

The Government’s website provides a full list of authorised installers for the Workplace Charging Scheme.  West & West is an approved installer for Rolec, EVBox, Go Ultra, EO, myenergi, and Smart EV charging points.  We also offer free site surveys and advice to businesses considering EV charging.
